Thanks to All Our Friends!
What a job our Friends of the Library pulled off last week! Boxes and boxes of books that had been sorted and stockpiled throughout the year were hauled to the elementary school for the annual Friends of the Library book sale. I apologize for not including a reminder before the sale in my column but like everyone else I was distracted or should I say obsessed with Harry Potter mania. Fortunately for us the Friends stayed on track in spite of Harry Potter. Fortunately for me it’s not too late to thank all who worked so hard throughout the year and on the weekend to make the book sale a success. This event is one of the Friends biggest fundraising events. It takes a lot of work by a lot of people throughout the year but has truly become an island tradition. As I look back through past columns thanking or recognizing the Friends is the one of the very few topics that gets repeated again and again. I try and I know Lauren tried not to repeat topics, but this one bears repeating. So I will continue to find ways to do this whether if it’s under the guise of the book sale, membership drives, looking for board members, or accepting donations. Let me say it again, we could not do all that we do here without our Friends group. The money they raise and the good will they generate are vital to the level of services the library is able to provide. If you missed the book sale, the Friends sell books from their store in the library year round and have an annual holiday book sale in November. The store hours are Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday 11:00-3:00. Friends also have a cart of paperback books for sale at all times in front of their store. As an additional note the Friends are looking to fill a board position. A Board member must have a love of the library, a willingness to help, and the ability to attend a monthly meeting. Thank you to our Friends group and to everyone else who supports our Friends group with memberships, volunteering, attending events, and donations!
