Thanks to Ruth OffenOn December 31st the Library Trustees will say goodbye to long standing Trustee, Ruth Offen. After serving on the Library Board of Trustees for 11 ½ years which included a partial term and two complete terms, Ruth has certainly put in her time. And who knows, maybe she could go on for another 11 ½ years, but according to the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) Island Library District Trustees cannot serve more than two complete consecutive terms. So it is with much appreciation we must accept Ruth leaving the board. Ruth came on board in 1996 taking over for Al Smith. Ruth started as an established business owner, parent of young son, volunteer at the elementary school, and Chairperson of the Library Art Committee. During her time Ruth has continually shared her dynamic energy and spirited passion with the board. Throughout the years she has held a key position in helping the library to grow and meet the changing needs of our community. I’m writing about this now as we are currently looking to fill Ruth’s position. The appointed trustee will not officially hold the position until January but we are taking advantage of recent interviews and momentum to get the appointment made in advance. This will also allow time for the new trustee to get oriented before they become active. As stated in previous columns library trustees are responsible for overseeing the operation of the library and planning for the future. This primarily involves establishing policy, setting the budget, hiring and evaluating the director, and advocating for the library. My favorite catch-all statement about the responsibilities of Trustees comes straight out of RCW 27.12.210 . After outlining specific powers and duties of Trustees it ends with, "Do all other acts necessary for the orderly and efficient management and control of the library." It’s a pretty important job. In addition to Ruth current Library Trustees include Tom Metke, Susan Rosenberg, Fred Henley, and recently appointed Lynn Weber/Roochvarg. Prospective candidates should send a letter of interest, along with a resume or list of qualifications, to:
All applications must be received by Friday, September 7th. Candidates are encouraged to attend the board meeting on Tuesday, September 11th at 6:00 pm at the library. After an interview process the appointment is made by the San Juan County Council. My sincere thanks go to you, Ruth, for your service and commitment to our library and community.
