The Results Are In
Ah, the fair. It almost seems like a distant memory now with the return to school and a distinct feeling of fall in the air. Any thoughts of the fair at this point are most likely related to next year and it’s possibilities. But here at the library we have one remaining report from the fair: the results from our Books to Grow With challenge. As many of you know at the library booth this year we asked everyone to write down the title of a "Book to Grow With" in exchange for the famous library beads. When asked for clarification I would simply say we are looking for a book that helped you grow in some way at some point in your life. Beyond that it was left it open to see what everyone could come up with. For some this was not an easy request. Many people had to come back after thinking about it for a while. I had to think about it for a while. Others knew immediately. Once again the Harry Potter series received the most picks. I was a little surprised as I thought other books had a strong chance of toppling the Harry Potter regime this year given the theme. But when I think about how many kids (and adults) spent the past ten years staying up all night hidden under the covers with a flashlight reading Harry Potter, I guess I’m not surprised. As has been shown over and over again, Harry Potter can take credit for inspiring a love of reading in this generation of children. For those of you who like statistics: we received 1223 votes. 629 titles received one vote. 78 titles received two. 28 titles received three, and down from there to Harry Potter with forty-one votes. See below for the complete list in descending order. A print copy of the list is also available at the library. One additional fair note is Charles H. Fiock, the author of the multiple fair award winning book It’s Me, May I Come In?: Autobiographical Stories and Illustrations, loaned one of his few copies of the book to the library to give the community an opportunity to check it out and have time to look through his work. Be sure to come in and check it out! It’s an amazing collection of pictures and drawings of the author’s time spent growing up in the Shasta Valley on a dairy farm.
