Got Buddies?Reading Buddies is a program co-sponsored by the San Juan Island Library and Friday Harbor Elementary School that matches elementary aged students with adult and teen volunteers to work on the students’ reading skills. What’s in it for the students is obvious, not only do they get in some time reading or being read to, they get to experience reading with a new person and see reading as an activity that everyone can enjoy. For the volunteers, they get a chance to model a positive activity for a child – and what better experience can any of us enjoy these days than that? Help a child not only become a stronger reader, but also show that child that reading can be something fun – something to be enjoyed throughout their lives. In school, reading is a necessary skill – a skill that can be enjoyed, but still, a skill that must be learned. In the library, we support the schools in this and we also try to encourage reading as a recreational activity for all. For children we do this by having a broad range of fiction and non-fiction titles available and by fun programs like the Summer Reading events and Reading Buddies. The Reading Buddies program allows community members to help young students develop in both reading as a skill, and as recreation. So, if any of you out there reading this think you’d like to help children develop their reading skills by volunteering about an hour a week during the school year, please think about coming to an information session about the Reading Buddies program on Thursday, September 20th at 5:00PM in the library meeting room. Any students interested in having a volunteer read with them should contact Jody Metzger at 378-5209 if they attend Friday Harbor Elementary School, or Shannan Sword at 378-2798 for any other elementary aged students. Be a buddy, help a child, help your self. |
