What a Way to Go

I don't write columns about every event at the library because if I did I would not have much time to write about anything else. Between all of our adult, teen, and children's programs we have something going on every week. But I want to make sure an event this week is highlighted as it has wide interest.

This Saturday, October 13th we are offering a screening and discussion of the documentary film "What a Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire." This is a feature length documentary that "reveals an even more 'Inconvenient Truth'" by examining present day global issues such as climate change, species extinction, oil depletion, and population overshoot.

The film screening will begin at 5:30 pm, followed by a discussion with the filmmakers, Timothy Bennett and Sally Erickson. This documentary film is approximately two hours long. The discussion will focus largely on the content of film and allow a chance for all to reflect on their reactions to what they see. This film takes pride in not offering quick fixes or letting you walk away feeling okay.

A short synopsis from their Web site states:

"Disturbing, compassionate, sometimes humorous personal essay about coming to grips with climate change, resource crises, environmental meltdown and the demise of the American lifestyle. Friends and experts analyze historical, social and psychological factors driving us toward human extinction. Bennettˇ¦s ruthless assessment challenges the audience to face terrifying times with courage and integrity."

This event is sponsored by Friends of the Library, Skagit Valley Community College and Spring Street International School. For more information about the movie go to: www.whatawaytogomovie.com/.
