MORE COLUMNS

Welcome to the Millennium

The new Millennium is almost here. In fact it’s only two short weeks away! The first week of November (November 6th to be exact if all goes as planned…) we will launch our new catalog system, Millennium. Keen readers will know this isn’t the first time I’ve written about this. In fact I started off the year writing in my New Year resolution column about how this was going to happen. Now ten months later, here we are just about ready to “go live!”

To properly celebrate the big event, this is the first in a short series of columns about Millennium highlighting a few of the advances and special features to come.

But before I get to that, there is the matter to address of why are we doing this anyway? A major change such as migrating to a completely new catalog system carries along with it more than its share of stress. There is also the significant initial cost for the software to consider.

As I have written in my previous columns our current system, Dynix, is an old system that has not been developed nor enhanced for some time. The company providing this software has since put its efforts into new systems. Additionally although no end date for support has been set, the company has been working to help libraries find a new solution for some time. What that means for us is while technology has radically changed in the past few years, our the catalog software has not.

We know that for our library to continue serving the needs of our community, it is crucial we stay current with developments in technology.

In Millennium enhancements are continually developed in partnership with libraries, assuring currency and relevancy.

Three bold statements we are making about Millennium:

  • Searches Will Work Better

  • Patrons Can Manage Their Accounts Better

  • Staff Can Work More Efficiently To Serve You Better

After that, it was a fairly easy decision to make the change. In my upcoming columns I will write specifically about what makes the above bold statements true. Welcome to the Millennium!
