Millennium is Here!

It's official! We are live with our new catalog system here at the library. You may have already noticed this if you used our online catalog this week. It has been a very smooth transition and we have already had a lot of positive feedback. Credit for the ease of this transition goes to our outstanding Technology Specialist, Floyd Bourne. His expertise, intellect, and commitment have made this migration possible. Please be sure to thank him personally for his work.

This week I will highlight a few of the new features that will make sure you get the search results you expect from our catalog. In fact one of the main reasons we selected Millennium is their focus on the user and their work to ensure searches are successful.

Author searches: Author searches are completed by entering last name, first name. But what if you enter first name last name inadvertently? Millennium will put you in an alphabetical list showing you were your entry would have been as well as offer you a way to correct and execute the proper last name, first name search with one simple link.

Spell check: When doing keyword searches Millennium will offer "Did you mean" suggestions.

Relevancy ranking: When doing a keyword search Millennium displays the most relevant materials on top of the result list. This allows you to get quickly to the items you are looking for instead of having to scroll down a long list to see the most relevant result.

Advanced keyword searching: From the advanced keyword search page you can easily enter multiple search terms in multiple indexes. You can limit by the collection, format, language, year of publication, or publisher. You can choose to sort by relevance, date, or title. Oh, the power!

To help everyone use these new features and more we're holding one-hour hands-on classes to help everyone learn how to use these and other new features! Come on in and learn how to:

  • See what you have checked out

  • Renew your items online

  • Put items on hold online

  • Add ratings to books you've read

  • Use "Right Result" searching to find what you're looking for

  • Use advanced sorting and limiting options to zero in on your target

  • Find what you're looking for in other libraries and databases

All sessions will cover the same ground so find a day that works for you and sign up.

Schedule:

  • 11 a.m.to noon Wednesday, November 14

  • 11 a.m.to noon Tuesday, November 20

  • 11 a.m.to noon Tuesday, November 27

  • 11 a.m.to noon Wednesday, November 28

To sign up for a class call the library at 378-2798 or send an email to sjlib@sjlib.org with the day of the class, your first and last name, and phone number. And don't forget we are here to help you personally every day. Come join us at the library for the new Millennium.
