See What You Can Do

We successfully implemented our new catalog system with a lot of positive feedback. While there are still a few kinks we are ironing out, we never had to shut down the system We apologize for any inconvenience the migration may have caused.

For now this is the final column I will write about Millennium and all of its benefits and advantages. This week I will highlight a few of the ways you can manage your library account online.

To manage your account you will need to log on to your account by entering your last name and barcode number.

Reading History: You can now choose to save a history of all the items you have checked out. This is something many people have requested for some time but we were not able to offer with our old system. But before doing this be aware of an important consideration relating to privacy. If you save your reading history and the library is properly subpoenaed for this information, we would be required to provide this information. For this reason you must elect to save your reading history. The default setting does not save any circulation history.

Holds: You can easily place hold requests as well as view items you have on hold and where you are in the hold line. You can also freeze a hold if you want to remain on the list but will be off-island for a period of time.

Update email: You can easily update your email address to receive overdue and billing notices. This is a convenient way to receive your library notices while saving paper and postage.

Viewing and renewing checked out materials: You can easily see a list of what you currently have checked out and when it is due. You can also renew materials that do not have a hold on them by simply selecting the item or items and clicking the renew button.

Rating materials: You can rate materials on a scale from 1-5 to share with the community. From your account you can change or delete your ratings.

As a reminder we're holding one-hour hands-on classes to help everyone learn how to use these and other new features! Come on in and learn how to:

  • See what you have checked out

  • Renew your items online

  • Put items on hold online

  • Add ratings to books you've read

  • Use "Right Result" searching to find what you're looking for

  • Use advanced sorting and limiting options to zero in on your target

  • Find what you're looking for in other libraries and databases

All sessions will cover the same ground so find a day that works for you and sign up.

Schedule:

  • 11 a.m.to noon Wednesday, November 14

  • 11 a.m.to noon Tuesday, November 20

  • 11 a.m.to noon Tuesday, November 27

  • 11 a.m.to noon Wednesday, November 28

To sign up for a class call the library at 378-2798 or send an email to sjlib@sjlib.org with the day of the class, your first and last name, and phone number. And don't forget we are here to help you personally every day. Come join us at the library for the new Millennium.
