Where We Stand

In April I wrote a column responding to a patron question about our circulation per capita ranking. I reported in 2004 our library held the fifth highest ranking our state. Well, I went back to check on the official 2005 rankings and to take a sneak peak at the 2006 draft rankings.

As expected our circulation per capita ranking dropped in 2005. It’s pretty safe to assume this is due to the remodel and our partial closure during 2005. We dropped from our previous fifth place ranking to a tenth place ranking. This was with a rate of 15.57 down from the previous rate of 18.20. But hey, even with our closure we were still in the top ten! Not too bad!

The draft 2006 state rankings have us higher, but still slightly below where we typically come in. The draft 2006 numbers show the circulation per capita rankings as follows:

  1. Kettle Falls Public Library 26.39

  2. Port Townsend Public Library 25.56

  3. Lopez Island Library District 21.34

  4. Orcas Island Library District 21.00

  5. Camas Public Library 18.02

  6. San Juan Island Library District 16.59

From there I went on to look at a few of the public library national statistics from 2005 and picked out a few interesting facts:

  • Washington State ranked fifth nationally in circulation per capita with a respectable rate of 11.1. This number is not far below the leader Ohio with a rate of 15.0 and is nicely above the national rate of 7.2.

  • Washington State ranked second nationally in library visits per capita with a rate of 7.0. This rate is just below Ohio with a rate of 7.2 and well above the national rate of 4.7.

  • Nationwide public library visits totaled 1.4 billion.

  • Nationwide circulation of public library materials was 2.1 billion. Of that number 35% was circulation of children’s materials.

Remember it’s not too late to up our circulation numbers for 2007. Come on in and check out a big pile of books before the end of December to add to our circulation numbers. I’m still counting on us breaking into the top three!
