New BeginningsHave you ever wanted to learn something new, but were too busy to learn how? Well now is your chance here at the library! Whether it’s hula lessons, or reading your poetry aloud for the very fist time in front of an audience—we’re here to help you get started with our spring time "New Beginnings" series of Live & Learn programs. What better time than the spring to start growing in new ways? Our super-star adult programmer has put together a great line-up of events for April and May: This Friday April 4th, 6:30 pm - Come here Washington State’s first Poet Laureate, Sam Green, read his poetry and talk about his experiences as a Waldron Island poet, editor of Brooding Heron Press, and Seattle University’s Northwest Writer-in-Residence. This program is offered in conjunction with Griffin Bay Bookstore. Be sure to mark your calendar for this special event! Friday April 11th, 7:00 pm – Continue to celebrate National Poetry Month with an evening of Poetry and Spoken Word by the fireplace. Guest Poets Anthony DiMichele and Teri Clark will read aloud, and host Tom Odegard will emcee for the open-mic period of the evening. Friday April 18th, 7:00 pm – Book discussion of Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir Eat, Pray Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia. Checkout or put your copy on hold now. This book is available in regular print, large print, and audio CD format. Friday April 25th, 7:00 pm – Join host and author Susan Wingate for an evening of literary readings with featured guest author Michael Collins. An open-mic period will follow. Saturday April 26th, 7:00 pm – Introduction to Hula workshop with Alice Hibberd. This beginner's class will be a hands-on introduction of the hula, including a simple Hawaiian chant, basic steps and their meanings, practicing the step rhythms with the ipu gourd, and learning a modern hula to a mele (melody). For ages grade 6-Adult. Please note registration is required for this workshop. To register please call 378-2798 or email abourne@sjlib.org. Saturday May 3rd, 5:30 pm – Master Gardener’s Workshop. Whether you want to start some veggies in pots or in a large garden, WSU Master Gardeners will share some of their tips and answer your questions on how to get going. Bring your gardening questions! Tuesdays May 13th, 20th, and 27th at 12:30 pm – Knitting workshop with Jessica Carter. Over three weeks, students will learn to read a pattern, develop an understanding of the language of knitting, and receive hands on guidance to create three different types of dishcloths—basic, circular and lacy. Please note registration is required for this event, and is open to all ages. Children should be accompanied by an adult. To register please call 378-2798 or e-mail abourne@sjlib.org. Sunday May 18th, 6:00 pm – Knit Lit Book Club meets to discuss KnitLit: Sweaters and Their Stories…and other Writing About Knitting edited by Linda Roghaar & Molly Wolf. Checkout or put your copy on hold now. Be sure to bring your knitting! And don’t forget: Literary Salon meets at the library on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm. This is a group of readers that meet to talk about whatever we are reading, including the good, the bad, and the ugly. If we loved it, we’ll tell you. If we hated it, we’ll tell you. Either way you will walk away with a list of books you never would have found on your own. Upcoming meeting dates are April 17th and May 15th. And then there are our children and teen program... Remember all library programs are free and open to the public. Thank you to Friends of the Library for sponsoring all of our programs.
