National Volunteer Work

The broadest, and maybe the most meaningful definition of volunteering: Doing more than you have to because you want to, in a cause you consider good. ~ Ivan Scheier

I start off with this quote as this week is National Volunteer Week (as you may have noticed by the large banner displayed on the front of the library). I came across this definition when I was searching for a tear provoking or laugh inducing quote to share with our volunteers at our annual volunteer appreciation luncheon this last Sunday. But as soon as I read this definition, I knew this was what I wanted to share.

One of things I value about living in this community is our culture of volunteerism. Do you know anyone who doesn’t volunteer to help some cause, some group, some neighbor in some way? I don’t. Not only do people jump in when an emergency hits and need is sudden and strong, but people volunteer countless hours every day to support our community and our full range of needs.

Here at the library we have over 80 volunteers who support us in countless ways. Many know that it is most frequently a volunteer who checks your book out to you, but we also have volunteers doing behind the scene tasks. These tasks include mending damaged items, putting plastic covers on the books, preparing magazines for the shelf, taking our cardboard to be recycled, reading books to our children, selling donations on e-bay, and even serving as a Library Trustee.

But most importantly each and every volunteer has our sincere thanks for believing in and supporting our cause. Because of our volunteer support we can help anybody in our community freely access information in any format when they need it. Because of our volunteers we can give people a way to explore independent educational and recreational interests. Because of our volunteers we can provide a space for our community to meet and work together.

This year we honor the anniversaries of our following volunteers:

  • Jean Sutliff 30 Years

  • Peter Morrison 25 Years

  • Barbara Fry 20 Years

  • Jo Critchlow 20 Years

  • Donna Alexander 15 Years

  • Liz Scott 15 Years

  • Sharyn Columna 10 Years

  • Jeanne Lee 10 Years

  • Ren Arnett 10 Years

  • Penny Woodall 10 Years

  • Susan Fjellman 5 Years

  • Gene Geyman 5 Years

  • Donna Riley 5 Years

  • Carol Smith 5 Years

  • Phyllis Kenward 5 Years

The next time you are in the library please be sure to take a moment to thank our wonderful volunteers! For more information about joining our cause contact Diana Warner, Volunteer Coordination by phone at 378-2798 or by email at dwarner@sjlib.org.
