Stuff for Sale!

Stuff. It is so easy to accumulate. Before you know it you have more than you can handle. And then what? If you are like most people you probably hold a garage sale, take a pile of stuff to the thrift store, or pass it all off to friends or family. And then at some point you simply throw stuff away or recycle it. Here at the library we face the same thing all the time, but as we are a public organization we need to be mindful of how we dispose of our stuff. We basically do the same thing as everyone else but are necessarily guided by Washington State code as well as our own internal policies.

Books and other materials we delete from our collection get passed on to the Friends of the Library who in turn sell the items in their book sale and give us the money raised. These may include books, videos, and audio books that have not circulated for a couple of years, need to be updated, or have simply become outdated. Damaged items we just recycle.

Then there are other larger things such as computers or furniture. If a piece of technology is really old or damaged and has no value we may recycle it. If it has some value we may try to sell it. If it doesn’t sell we may donate it to the schools or another service organization that can find a use for it.

As you may have guessed or have already heard we are currently auctioning a few items off. These include computers, printers, and plantings. Check out our website at http://www.sjlib.org/surplus.html or see below for a list of surplus items. Sealed bids are due this Friday the 9th at 6:00 p.m. Please use the form available at the library or again on our website at: www.sjlib.org/surplus.html. There’s still time to bid!
