Highlights of 2009
posted 01/06/2010
Some of the highlights from 2009: San Juan Story Collection. In partnership with the Historical Museum, the Town, and the San Juan National Historical Park Service and with the help from some amazing volunteers, we put together our second online digital collection. We digitized over 200 items from island families personal collections. This was funded by a grant through Washington State Library. Check it out:http://www.washingtonruralheritage.org/sanjuan/ Programming area redesign. We redesigned the front area of the library where we do the majority of our programming. With money from the Friends of the Library we put in a new screen and projector. With library money we designed new shelving to better accommodate our programming and create a welcoming space as you enter the library. Youth Services Librarians. We said hello and goodbye to Jim Thomas. He came in planned our summer reading program, reorganized the children's collection, pulled off a ton of programming and then had to leave us. We then got to welcome Melina Lagios to our community. She's been an instant hit with her great energy and spirit. Qatar. We said a fond farewell to Emily Wolf and she and her family embarked on a grand adventure teaching in Qatar. By all accounts it's all they hoped it would be. Celebrating the Centennial. We celebrated turning 100 with a ton of special programming. This included a One Book/One Play program with a visit from author Laurie King, 100 book summer reading challenge, book talks, and other great history programs. Art Committee. Under the fearless leadership of Diane Martindale, the Library Art Committee reestablished itself. They didn't waste any time and immediately set up a schedule and brought local art back into the library. Here's to a great 2010 with even more exciting opportunities and changes!
