Sasquatch Encounters
posted 01/13/2010
Started in 1997 as a way to fill in a gap between picture book and teen reading promotion programs, the Sasquatch Reading Award has succeeded in getting kids excited about reading and books. Twelve books for intermediate readers, or kids in grades 3-6, are specially selected and promoted to school aged kids each year. Books are nominated by teachers, librarians, book store owners, and students. The only requirement for nominations is that they were published in the three years prior. From these nominations a committee selects twelve titles that offer a range of reading levels and diversity in the stories, including both fiction and nonfiction titles. The rules to vote are simple: You must be student aged (but not necessarily in grades 3-6) and have read at least two of the books on the list. Votes will be collected here at the public library and at the elementary public school library to be sent off for tallying by Washington State Library Media Association by April 1st. Melina and I get to join forces with Sally Waite at the elementary school this week to booktalk the titles and get the kids reading. This is the only thing I personally still do with the kids. I do it because it is so much fun to see how excited the kids get about reading and talking about these books. They instantly line up to check out the books and get their names on hold lists. If you have a child in your life, be sure to check out the titles and read some of the books together. The 2009 winner was The Homework Machine by Dan Gutman.
