Feedback wanted on new online card catalog

The San Juan Island Library is testing a new web interface for access to the online catalog. We'd like to get your opinions and questions, so if you have a few moments to take a look, please do. The new system is faster, and is much more intuitive - the way it works makes more sense to many new users. It also resolves the problems our patrons have been having with some types of computers (such as Mac and Windows XP).

When you are using the new interface, remember that you are looking at the same information. The data has not changed, just the window you use to look at it. It's like looking through a window with colored glass, or one with small divided panes. You still get the same landscape, but it looks different because of the software filter.

For those of you haven't virtually visited the library's catalog at all yet, we offer access to our database, including your account information, via the library's website. You can find a book and see if it's checked out or not, you can put items on hold, and you can look up the due dates of your books and renew them (as long as nobody is waiting for them, that is). You can even see where you are on the hold list for a new bestseller.

A brand-new feature of the "I-pac" software is the ability to make lists of books that you want to remember. Your Book List will be available to you indefinitely - you can use it as a tool to remember which items you want to check out, or to remember which books you've already read - the possibilities are endless!

To get to the new I-pac page, go to the library's website at www.sjlib.org and then click on the "library catalog" link (just below "you are about to embark on a great adventure…." on the right side). Then click on "Please explore our new catalog page here." Remember to have your library card number handy if you want to access your account. Your PIN number is the last four digits of your telephone number.

Please feel free to send us your feedback. Technical questions and comments should be sent to Michael Perren at mperren@sjlib.org, the Technology Specialist. My sincere thanks go to Michael, who has worked long and hard to make this possible. General questions can be directed to me at lstara@sjlib.org.
