Looking forward to the next 52

Last week, Sharon Kivisto informed me that I had written my 52nd column for the Islander. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Sharon and Matt for hosting the column, and to especially thank all of the readers who have taken the time to comment on my written offerings. It's hard to fire these things off into a vacuum, and your input has been very helpful.

Linda Barnhart and I spent Thursday and Friday in Yakima, attending the Washington Library Association's annual conference. Let me tell you, you haven't lived until you've spent a couple of days in Yakima with a bunch of librarians. You'd be surprised what goes on.

Truly, it was a remarkable conference, and I have pages and pages of notes from the workshops, many of which have been the subject of columns this past year. The latest on patron privacy in the wake of the USA-PATRIOT Act, the well-being of the Washington State Library, and various aspects of library service in the region were all addressed. We also were lucky enough to visit the Yakama Nation Cultural Center for a presentation of traditional dancing and storytelling.

I am as clueless as you as to what I will write about in the next 51 columns - things change very quickly in the library world. It's a far cry from the days of Palmer script on cards for the catalog (did you know that they used to teach handwriting in library school?). I will do my best to keep you informed. And I also take requests!
