"Out of the Darkness, There Came a Light"

posted 05/05/03
The library recently sent out a challenge to all Middle- and High-School aged students on the island to use that phrase as the inspiration for a 600-word short story. The first San Juan Island Library Young Authors Fiction Contest is a spectacular success! My sincere thanks go out to the judges, local authors Gene Geyman, Joan Schwinge and Janet Thomas. All three of them read each and every one of the 50 entries and then met to choose first, second and third places - a truly daunting task.

The winners' names are now a closely guarded secret. If you want to be among the first to know, join us this Wednesday, May 7 at 6:30 pm in the library for the official Awards Ceremony. Winners will be announced and the winning stories will have their first public reading!

Siri Thorson, one of our Teen Library Assistants, organized the contest with help from Laura Tretter, our spectacular Youth Services Librarian. Ian Byington was also helpful in procuring prizes - and such prizes they are!

First prize is a round-trip flight on Kenmore Air and Seattle Mariners tickets for four!!! Second is a $50 gift certificate to Roche Harbor Resort, and the third place winner will receive a collection of gift certificates from Tookies/Christies, Paradise Lanes, and Vic's.

It is only with the generosity of local businesses like these, along with the hours of work from staff and the volunteer judges, that the library can sponsor programs like this. Who knows what literary talent may spring from our midst, with just a little encouragement? I, for one, will be there to hear our young authors' completions of the enigmatic thought, "Out of the darkness, there came a light…."
