Kelp, kayaks and kudos
posted 05/20/03
The book is Jennifer's account of her adventures kayaking the Inside Passage by herself. In her slide show and lecture, she described the trip (which she did in sections at different times) and also went into great detail about her wildharvesting of seaweeds, land plants, and shellfishes to supplement her diet along the way. I got on Jennifer's e-mailing list, and jumped at the chance to participate in a three-day "Wildharvesting by Kayak" trip on/off Lummi Island this past weekend. What a time we had! I can now identify, prepare and cook several different kinds of seaweeds and local land plants. We harvested and dined on such delicacies as Bullwhip Kelp Salsa, Limpet Marinara, Stir-fried Nettles, Seaweed Tempura, and Chocolate Ocean Pudding (the thickening agent is a seaweed). For those of you who aren't aware of the Inquiring Mind series, it is a program organized by the Washington Commission for the Humanities. Our Friends of the Library group has been bringing Inquiring Mind speakers to the island for several years. We have enjoyed a wide variety of speakers over the last year, including presentations on Baseball in America, Harriet Tubman, the Music of the Oregon Trail, and Leonardo Da Vinci. Kathy Babbitt, our wonderful Volunteer Coordinator, is also on the Board of the Friends of the San Juan Island Library, and is responsible for scheduling these programs. Kudos to Kathy, the Friends of the Library, and the Washington Commission for the Humanities for making these opportunities available to us! If you'd like to know more about the programs or what's coming up soon, contact Kathy at kbabbitt@sjlib.org. If you'd like to get involved with our wonderful Friends of the Library group, contact Eve Burton, President of the Board, at even@interisland.net. If you'd like information on making Kelp Pickles or Grilled Black Katy Chiton, talk to me.
