Always on Sunday
posted 05/26/03
My professional philosophy holds that the public library should be open every day. Even though school will soon be out for the summer, homework is not the only reason people come to the library on Sunday - not by any stretch of the imagination. I did an informal study of library use on Sundays last summer, the first year we tried staying open, and the number of visitors was surprising. If the weather is nice, often people just make a quick choice from the new books or the Great Reads selections, but we get a lot of people who want to do research or check their e-mail. There is also summer school, as well as the various camps and research institutes. As the word has gotten out that we're open all year, Sunday library use has grown dramatically - I think people may have been confused about what parts of the year we were closed, so they just never came on Sunday at all. Another important thing, to me, is that there is a professional librarian on duty every day. For this reason, Laura Tretter works Tuesdays through Saturdays and I work Sundays through Thursdays. Sometimes people ask me why, as the Boss Lady, I don't insist on having weekends off; my response is that people's information needs don't stop on the weekends. If we are going to open the doors, we need to offer good service - every day. Just for review, the library's hours are:
Days we will be closed for the rest of 2003 include:
