Birds, birds, birds!

When you visit the library this summer, you may notice that our set of the Oxford English Dictionary is temporarily relocated. In its usual place is a magnificent new addition to the library's reference collection: The Birds of North America: Life Histories for the 21st Century.

This is a comprehensive and exhaustive compilation of information about 716 species of birds "that breed in continental Canada and the United States north of Mexico plus Hawaii and Baja California," published over the last 10 years by the American Ornithologists' Union and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.

Each species profile includes a color photograph, black and white illustrations, colored maps and diagrams, as well as textual information under the major headings of:

  • Distinguishing Characteristics
  • Distribution
  • Systematics
  • Migration
  • Habitat
  • Food Habits
  • Sounds
  • Behavior
  • Breeding
  • Demography and Populations,
  • Conservation and Management
  • Appearance
  • and Measurements.

A resource of this magnitude is not normally within the reach of a library of this size. This was a donation made possible by a fund-raising campaign by our local Audubon Society chapter, spearheaded by Walter MacGinitie. When I looked into my files I was shocked to discover that the initial suggestion by Mr. MacGinitie was made in March of 2002, over a year ago.

The other group that deserves special thanks is the Friends of the San Juan Island Library. When the BNA publications finally arrived at the library several months ago, we discovered to our dismay that they were printed in a pamphlet format, not really suitable for library use. Not only did the Friends make a substantial contribution to the original purchase fund, but they also agreed to pay for binding the whole set into 47 imposing volumes.

If you are a birder, a natural history buff, or just curious about that curious bird in your backyard, stop by and take a look at this tremendous addition to the library.
