Filling the Well ...

By Jillian Hopkins

The New Year brings the promise of new and wonderful things. With a clean slate, a white canvas, crisp new pages in a calendar -anything is possible. It's an opportunity to manifest our heart's desire.

For many of us, health is figured in the new picture, and, in one form or another, lands on our New Year Resolution lists. We decide to break nasty habits, introduce more positive ones or finally go after a dream. Our intention is good...our determination strong...our resolve palpable.

The true challenge begins when we attempt to move from the hope of manifesting something new to making it a real, living and breathing thing. To optimize success, the first key is to break down our health goals into baby steps. Here are a few suggestions to support you in your efforts.

1) Get clear about what health looks like for you in your life. Think mind, body and spirit. Write down your goals for each.

2) Focus on one goal at a time. Each goal you work on builds a health and wellness foundation for your life.

3) Give yourself permission to devote time to these specific goals. This means not only carving out the time and space, but also giving yourself the okay to do this.

4) Ask family and friends for support. Be specific about what you need. For example, ask your partner or spouse to share responsibilities with kid coverage, marketing, etc., to ensure you have time to take a class, go for a run, have quiet time to write in your journal. Return the favor. Also, don't be afraid to ask for encouragement. Although, success is ultimately up to us, encouragement goes a long way!

5) Create a buddy system. As a team, sign up for a yoga class, take daily walks, shop for organic foods, share recipes and other health tips. Encourage and support each other when resolve weakens.

6) Mail yourself a postcard reminding yourself why you've made the goal(s) in the first place. Congratulate yourself for caring so much!

7) Celebrate successes, however small. Treat yourself to a deep tissue massage, reflexology, a facial or a body wrap. You not only deserve the pleasure, but these treatments significantly contribute to your over-all health and well-being.

Whatever your goals are for the New Year - it's ultimately about creating health and wellness in your life. I read recently the word "wellness" is becoming the buzzword in the spa industry because spas are becoming more focused on integrated health. Medical research continually validates the mind/body connection and how this plays profoundly in the quality of our lives.

I like the word "wellness", because it conjures - filling the well! If our well is running dry, we have little juice to run on and little juice to give. If we're filling up our well with good, healthy practices...we nourish ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The bonus is the overflow goes to those we love.
