A combination of wet weather and a deadline means approximately four miles of Roche Harbor Road will be chipsealed right before the 4th of July holiday.
Russ Harvey of San Juan County Public Works Department said originally the work was to be completed three weeks ago. The work cannot be put off until after the holiday because equipment must leave the island.
San Juan County has an inter-local agreement with Island County for use of the equipment. Harvey contacted Island County to see if San Juan could keep the equipment longer, but Island County needs it by July 8.
The road crew will "be as prompt as possible with the sweeping" Harvey said. It will be swept on Monday and Wednesday. Loose rock makes riding bicycles and driving motorcycles difficult.
The work begins at White Point and extends for about four miles down Roche Harbor Road.
