Poulsbo man dies in sailing accident in San Juans

posted 06/08/03
Thomas Stroup, 68, of Poulsbo died on the first day of a planned weeklong solo sailing trip through the San Juan Islands and Gulf Islands. Residents of the Watmough Bay area on the south end of Lopez Island saw his 34-foot sailing vessel aground and his body on the beach around 7 a.m. this morning and called the sheriff's office.

Sheriff Bill Cumming said it appears Stroup fell into the water around 10 p.m. while he was attempting to place an anchor in an effort to free his boat. His family has been notified of his death. They said he had more than 40 years of sailing experience.
