updated 12/09/2007 posted 12/08/2007
Artura Morales was arrested Sunday morning when he turned himself in at the San Juan County's sheriff's office. He allegedly drove the car which struck brothers Michael and Wilson Schubert and Michael's wife Meghann as they walked home along Tucker Avenue in Friday Harbor Friday night (Dec. 7, 2007). The car was found Friday night and impounded.

San Juan Island EMS Chief Jim Cole told Jan Schubert, he estimated Meghann was thrown 50 feet in the air and Michael was thrown 30 feet. Meghann was medevacued to Harborview Medical Center where she was treated for head injuries. She has a chip in her skull and a lot of stitches on her forehead according to Jan. She returned home Saturday.

Her husband and younger brother were treated for injuries at the medical center and released.

"They're all stoved up. They're pretty banged up," Jan said in a phone interview Sunday afternoon. The family considers it a miracle the injuries weren't worse. "We are very thankful how quick the response was. Meghann was in the helicopter 20 minutes after it happened."

On Thursday, the young couple will have another reason to celebrate. They have spent the past year, building their first home through Homes for Islanders at Rocky Bay. A dinner to celebrate and hand out keys is planned for Thursday, Dec. 13.

Morales is in custody.
