Decatur woman dies in car accident

posted 03/12/03
Gina Lee Barker, 29, died after her car went into a ditch northeast of the runway on Decatur Island last evening, (March 11, 2003). She was returning home with a passenger when the car accident occurred. Barker was partially ejected from the car and ended up pinned under the vehicle in the ditch which had water in it. The passenger secured Barker's head above the water and ran for help. When he returned she was dead.

Residents used a backhoe to move the car. A former paramedic pronounced her dead at the scene. San Juan County deputies responded to the scene. The victim's body was taken to Anacortes where a post-mortem will be conducted, said Sheriff Bill Cumming. Cause of the accident is unknown at this time.

Barker had lived on Decatur for the past few years and had a five-year-old child. Barker's family has long-time ties to the island, according to Cumming.
