Charges expected to be filed in car/house crash

posted 03/11/05
San Juan County Prosecutor Randy Gaylord said he expects charges will be filed against the 17-year-old San Juan Island girl who drove her car into a house last week. Shortly after the March 4 accident, deputies directly filed driving under the influence charges with San Juan County District Court. That is the normal procedure in dui cases that haven't involved a crash.

Gaylord said direct filing was a mistake in this case and his office had the charges dismissed without prejudice. Once the investigation of the March 4 crash is completed by the sheriff's office, a report will be forwarded to the prosecutor's office for prosecution.

According to accident report the driver tested .123 and .114 for alcohol after the crash.

Accident victim home from hospital

A 17-year-old San Juan Island girl, who suffered "a knock to the head " when the car she was riding in struck a house yesterday, was released from a mainland hospital Saturday night. The driver of the car, another 17-year-old San Juan Island girl, was not injured in the Friday, March 4 accident, which deputies believe alcohol may have been involved, San Juan County Sheriff Bill Cumming said.

A blood sample was taken from the driver at the scene and will be analyzed, Cumming said. Investigators will also examine the car for mechanical problems and the girls' activities prior to the accident. Vehicular assault charges are being considered, Cumming said.

No one was home, when a dark blue Honda Civic crashed into a bedroom of a house on Eagle Cove Drive on San Juan Island about 5:15 p.m. The car's driver- and passenger-side airbags deployed. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and the passenger was not, Cumming said. Since the passenger went unconscious, and emergency medical workers feared she might have closed-head injuries, she was flown to Harborview Medical Center.

San Juan Island Fire Chief Bill McLaughlin owns the house. "I couldn't believe it when I heard the call," he said. "I thought someone got the address wrong." His house is more than 100 feet from Cattle Point Road. The car was apparently traveling north on Cattle Point Road and had passed the entrance to American Camp when it left the roadway, traveled through brush, sideswiped a tree and smashed into the house.

McLaughlin is moving to a new home in 11 days.

The car crashed into a bedroom wall.

Both airbags deployed.

The house is located more than 100 feet from Cattle Point Road.
