The 17-year-old female was taken to Inter-Island Medical Center. She complained of neck and back soreness and was airlifted to a mainland hospital for evaluation. She was released the next day. Two other passengers in the car were uninjured. In her statement to deputies, she said Columbus took the keys without permission. She decided she should get in the car with him since she wasn't able to stop him. According to the sheriff deputy's report, the speeding car failed to make the turn and went off the west end of Larsen Street, through a fence, over a ditch and into the rear of a house at about 9:15 p.m. The house and an attached shed -- more than 100 feet from the corner of Larsen Street and Carter Avenue -- were damaged. Items in the shed and home also were wrecked. Firefighters used a fan to dry gasoline that spilled from a can in the shed. |
