Scotty Gaines heads home todayposted 01/17/00
Even with his jaw wired shut, Scotty Gaines had plenty of kind words for his fellow San Juan Islanders. Speaking from his hospital room in Bellingham yesterday, Gaines thanked everyone for all of the flowers, cards, support, and concern he's received since his Jan. 9 car accident. "Thank God I live on San Juan Island," he said. "I love everybody and I'm ready to return to what Ernie Gann called 'the last civilized place on earth.'" He expects to be released from St. Joseph Hospital today. He was seriously injured when he swerved to avoid a deer and his car ended up smashed against a tree. Besides a broken jaw, he has three broken ribs and a crushed disc in his neck. His left arm is paralyzed, though he can wiggle his fingers. The paralysis may be temporary, but tests to determine that cannot be done for a month. Gaines has lived on San Juan Island for 11 ½ years and has been active in the local theater. The accident hasn't dampened his enthusiasm. "I wish I could audition for Gary's show -- Pump House Boys," he said. "It's going to be a great show, everyone should go."
