Ballots due tomorrow

Judicial race decided then

posted 08/18/2008
Registered voters will decide who will serve as San Juan County Superior Court Judge by casting their votes in the primary election. The deadline to return the ballots to the county Election Office is 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 19.

County Auditor Milene Henley said, "11,037 ballots have been mailed for this election. Of that number, only thirty percent had been returned as of Friday, August 15. "We're expecting a big turnout for this election," says Henley, "so we know there are a lot of ballots still sitting on kitchen tables."

Ballots postmarked through Tuesday will be counted, but the early closing times of our local post offices can be problematic. If your ballot is dropped off at the post office after the postal closing time on Tuesday, it will not be postmarked on Tuesday and will not count. The safest way to return a ballot this late is to drop it in one of the ballot boxes on San Juan, Orcas, or Lopez Islands. The San Juan box is in front of the courthouse; the Orcas box is at the Senior Center; and the Lopez box is at the Village fire station.

The other races on the ballot are to narrow the field of candidates in primary races. The top two candidates in each race will continue on to the general election to be held on November 4. To read more about the Top Two Primary system visit the Secretary of State's WEB SITE
