PRESS RELEASE: I am announcing my candidacy for the County Council from District 1. If elected, I will bring sound judgment, common sense, and vision for the future to this job. I have the practical experience it takes to be an effective member of the Council.

I am a long time island resident and have been active in local affairs for almost 25 years. I believe that San Juan County is the best place on earth to live. Those of us fortunate enough to call the islands "home" cherish this place. I will work to protect the quality of life we enjoy in the islands.

I can't make any big promises for sweeping change but I will promise this, I will work hard and smart and I will always put our community interests ahead of special interests. I will do this by running a frugal campaign and not taking contributions from special interest groups. I think we already pay too much for government.

Islanders pay the highest per capita taxes in Washington by almost 2 to 1 over the second place King County. This is not something to be proud of. I will be a strong advocate for less spending and local control.

When it comes to local control I believe our Council has lost its way. The citizens of San Juan County narrowly escaped a decision by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to place most of the shorelines of our islands into an Aquatic Reserve for 90 years. If we lose the right to determine our own future, our political differences cease to matter. Local citizens should decide how to manage our precious resources not State or Federal bureaucrats. As a Councilman I will fight for local control and be reluctant to give up any local decision-making authority to others.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to earning your support. I welcome your thoughts, ideas and suggestions for improving our County government. My phone number is 378-9702.
