Mindy Kayl running for county Council

posted 05/28/2008
Mindy Kayl is running for the position of San Juan County Council, Orcas West (District 4). Her campaign promise is to clearly and professionally represent citizens at the county and state level. She pledges to use common sense, courage and creativity to:

  • Build a more diverse economy, by promoting the support of small business, recruiting green industry, producing more goods locally, supporting farming and eco-tourism, and encourage professional mentoring.

  • Support the planning department, by establishing clear rules for development, identifying critical areas, and providing fair and timely permitting.

  • Promote environmental stewardship to maintain quality of life, property values, and protect our critical water resources.

  • Support advisory groups and listen to their deliberated advice.

  • Preserve our diverse community by supporting schools, senior programs, affordable housing, community services and the arts.

  • Communicate with constituents by being accessible in the community and openly sharing.

Kayl, who has lived on the island for 18 years, owns a small farm in Crow Valley and represents the rapidly disappearing demographic of the working landowner. She promises to advocate for the needs of the community and provide a voice for Orcas Island.

She says her experiences on the Eastsound Planning and Review Committee (EPRC, 2006 to present) and on the Board of Freeholders (2004) give her a current perspective of issues and a working knowledge of the problems facing county government today. Kayl said, "The issues facing the county demand courage, common sense and creativity."

She worked for eight years on research ships in Antarctica, where her courage and tenacity helped her survive extreme conditions, while her creative problem-solving skills brought groups of scientists and foreign nationals together to safely accomplish objectives. She has used common sense and hard work to develop a small farm and build a wetlands consulting business.

More information on her background and her campaign platform are available on mindykayl.com or e-mail her at mindy@mindykayl.com.
