Stuart Island Cemetery District election: A choice but more of the same

Voters finally have at least one choice for the Stuart Island Cemetery District Commissioner Position No. 1. Those 43 voters shouldn't expect a change in the district commission membership, though.
When no candidate filed in 1995, 1997 and 1999, David Ericksen was reappointed to the commission. "After serving my third term unelected, I decided to file," said Ericksen, a founding member of the cemetery district when first elected 18 years ago.
"I'm doing my civic duty," Ericksen joked yesterday after filing with the San Juan County Elections Office.
Since Ericksen's an official candidate for this fall's general election, he can submit a statement for the voter's pamphlet, county Elections Supervisor Sandy Gillespie informed the commercial fisherman. Ericksen quickly cast a campaign slogan: "All our customers have been satisfied!"
If elected for the third time, Ericksen plans to serve the full six-year term. That will put his tenure at 24 years. And that probably won't be long enough for Ericksen, given his philosophy of leaving the position. "It's an office you can't get out of unless you're joining the people you've been serving," Ericksen said.
