posted 12/12/00
Thieves made off with an automatic teller machine filled with $8,380 in $20 bills from an Eastsound store between 10 p.m. Dec. 4 and 6 a.m. Dec. 5.
San Juan County sheriff deputies are determining if the theft of the ATM, valued at $11,403 excluding the cash, and a burglary two days early at the same store are related, said Sheriff Bill Cumming. In that break-in, several cartons of cigarettes were stolen and the thieves left marks near the ATM and the store's safe.
A worker discovered the missing ATM when she arrived at the store the morning of Dec. 5. Deputies investigating the burglary are processing physical evidence found at the crime scene, Cumming said.
