Taser proves its worth

posted 11/10/04
A break-in, a burglary, an assault, and damage to a patrol car - all done by the same man - kept deputies busy Saturday night in Friday Harbor. A 24-year-old Mountlake Terrace man, ended up in jail facing charges of malicious mischief, second-degree assault, residential burglary, and driving under the influence. He will be arraigned Monday, Nov. 15, 2004 in San Juan County Superior Court.

The trouble began at 4:30 p.m. November 6 when deputies received a report of an aggressive man approaching juveniles on Spring Street and demanding to buy drugs. A search for the white van the suspect was reportedly driving was unsuccessful.

At 6:23 p.m. a Friday Harbor man ran into the sheriff's office and reported two men had barged into his apartment. Because he didn't have a telephone, he ran to the sheriff's office to seek help. A deputy accompanied him back to his apartment on Jensen alley. The men were gone as was the victim's guitar and amplifier.

Shortly afterwards, several teenage girls drove to the sheriff's office to report being harrassed by two men at Jacksons Beach. According to reports, the men were looking for drugs.

At 9:15 p.m. dispatchers received a call about a confrontation on Spring Street. At the same time, an 18-year-old Friday Harbor man, bleeding from his mouth, arrived at the sheriff's office. He told deputies he had been assaulted by a man on Spring Street. The victim's front tooth was split in half and pushed back into his gums. He was treated at the medical center for several lacerations. The assailant may have had something in his hand when he punched the younger man. According to reports, the injuries were consistent with being hit with a solid object.

While one deputy interviewed witnesses on Spring Street, another deputy found the white van in a parking lot. The deputy took the Mountlake Terrace man into custody. It took two deputies to get him into the patrol car. Once inside he kicked out the driver's side rear window.

He calmed down only after a deputy pointed a taser at him. According to the report, as soon as the laser sight was turned on, he backed down. He said he had been hit be a taser before. Sheriff Bill Cumming said the taser proved its value as an effective tool for use in such situations.

The suspect was transported to the sheriff's office where he was booked. He refused a breathalyzer test. He appeared in San Juan County Superior Court on Monday, November 8 for a probable cause hearing. He was accused of second-degree assault, second-degree malicious mischief, driving under the influence, and resisting arrest. On Tuesday, he was transported to Island County jail.

A 15-year-old Everett boy who was with the Mountlake Terrace man was turned over to juvenile authorities. The two had come to San Juan Island to install a hardwood floor.
