January 2003

January 31, 2003

A 50-year-old Friday Harbor man was observed trying to run a 30-year-old woman's car off the road. An off-duty deputy was driving behind the cars. The man drove down the center of the road so the woman could not pass, slowed down to 10 to 15 mph and was driving on the shoulder. He resisted arrest when he was taken into custody. He was booked pending a mental health evaluation on charges of reckless endangerment, reckless driving and resisting arrest.

A 35-year-old Friday Harbor man arrested on outstanding warrant.

A man about 18 to 21 years of age was found sleeping in the cab of a county truck. He was taken into the county shop to await a deputy. He asked to use the restroom and took off through a window in the restroom. There were no damages to the truck and no items were missing.

January 29, 2003

A 45-year-old Friday Harbor man reported a digital camera was taken from a job site.

A 29-year-old Orcas man was arrested for third-degree driving while license suspended or revoked, for not having a valid operator's license and for speeding.

at toga party

Eighteen people were arrested for minor in possession charges at a San Juan Island toga party Friday, January 17, 2003. Sheriff Bill Cumming said a search warrant was obtained after the deputies were refused entry to the home. Judge Vicki Churchill granted the search warrant.

The party-goers underwent sobriety tests and many were tested with a portable breathalyzer. Fourteen juveniles were referred to the Juvenile Court system according to Cumming. Four other people between the ages of 18 and 21 were arrested for possession/consumption of alcohol.

January 24, 2003

A 29-year-old Orcas Island man was pulled over for speeding on Orcas Road. According to the deputy's report, he lied about his identity to the deputy. He was cited for third-degree driving while license suspended or revoked and for not having a valid operator’s license and speeding.

January 23, 2003

A 54-year-old woman discovered her debit card was missing and someone had used it.

January 22

A 42-year-old Eastsound man was arrested on driving while under the influence after he flipped his pickup truck on Orcas Road.

January 21

$3,900 worth of paintball equipment was stolen from a trailer on San Juan Island. An investigation continues.

A 25-year-old Friday Harbor man reported someone had damaged his red Ford truck while it was parked on San Juan Island.

A 24-year-old Lopez Island man was arrested on outstanding warrants from Skagit and San Juan Counties.

January 18, 2003

A 32-year-old Eastsound man was seen in an Eastsound tavern. He is under court orders to not enter establishments that primarily serves alcohol. He was given a courtesy ride home. A report was sent to his probation officer.

January 19

A 44-year-old Lopez man reported someone had taken a sledge hammer, axe and splitting wedge from a tool shed.

January 17

A 28-year-old Renton man was arrested on San Juan Island after entering the U.S. without clearing customs. He had a large amount of packaged marijuana when he was arrested.

January 15

A small black lab mix dog was found running on Orcas Island. It had tags but the number on them was disconnected. It was taken to the APS.

January 14

A 26-year-old Eastsound man called deputies after a 36-year-old Eastsound woman wouldn't leave his yard. Deputies removed her. The woman had a restraining order against the man.

A 30-year-old Friday Harbor man was arrested for fourth-degree assault regarding a 33-year-old woman.

A 35mm camera was found and turned over to Orcas Island deputies.

A 42-year-old Eastsound man reported two bicycles had been stolen. They were unlocked in an apartment complex carport.

A 46-year-old Lopez Island man was cited for driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.

A deputy found dark oily tire marks at the intersection of Fish Bay and Dill Roads. An oil can was found nearby. Tire marks indicated the vehicle had driven through the oil to spin the tires faster. A vehicle with oil on its tires was found at a 22-year-old Lopez Island man's residence. He was cited for aiding negligent driving. A 23-year-old Friday Harbor man was cited for negligent driving.

January 13

An 83-year-old Friday Harbor woman found some rolled up money on the floor at the checkstand at a Friday Harbor grocery store. It was rolled up the same way she rolled her money, so she thought it was hers and took it home. Later she counted her money and thought she had too much. She returned the money to the store. No one had reported any money missing.

January 12

A 21-year-old Friday Harbor man was cited for hit and run unattended. A 24-year-old Friday Harbor man discovered his truck had been damaged during the night, and discovered the younger man’s truck had matching damage.

A 58-year-old Friday Harbor man’s stereo tape deck was stolen from his unlocked van.

An 18-year-old Friday Harbor man was seen driving at a high rate of speed through a stop sign at Wold and Boyce Roads. He was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to stop, over the center line, open container in vehicle.

January 10, 2003

A 48-year-old Friday Harbor man was arrested for violating court orders after he was found to be living with his wife and children. He was also charged with possession of marijuana.

A 20-year-old Friday Harbor man was arrested on charges of violating his probation conditions and minor in possession of alcohol.

A handmade gypsy doll worth $2,000, doll clothes, clothing, wedding dress, a 16-inch gold necklace, wedding ring and books were reported missing from an Orcas Island woman's home.

January 9, 2003

A 60-year-old Eastsound man returned to his vehicle after parking it for three hours and discovered someone had stolen the spare tire out of the unlocked camper shell.

January 8, 2003

An injured deer was put down by a deputy.

A camera was stolen out of a truck bed while on the ferry. The truck had a canopy but the bed was assessible through a missing piece near the taillight.

The ferry landing on Lopez Island was closed temporarily after a mentally disturbed 54-year-old man was screaming and had to be subdued physically. He was flown to Skagit for an involuntary commitment hearing.

A 28-year-old Friday Harbor man was arrested on an outstanding warrant from District Court.

A 23-year-old Friday Harbor man was arrested on an outstanding warrant from District Court.

A counterfeit $20 bill was found in the till at an Eastsound gas station. An investigation is ongoing.

A 43-year-old Eastsound woman was arrested on charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol after a two-car non-injury accident on North Beach Road.

January 7, 2003

A 58-year-old Lopez Island man was arrested on charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

January 6, 2003

A 20-year-old Friday Harbor man was observed having contact with two individuals who were on probation. He was under court orders not to do so.

A 43-year-old Friday Harbor woman reported two Great Danes were chasing her llamas. This is the second violation of dogs at large for the owner, a 37-year-old Friday Harbor woman. She will be sent an infraction notice.

The same 37-year-old woman was called to retrieve her Great Danes after they were running at large. Another infraction notice will be sent.

A 23-year-old Lopez Island man was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after he was pulled over for having a broken taillight.

Someone stole a red three-gallon gas can from a skiff at the Port of Friday Harbor.

A report was filed stating a 55-year-old Friday Harbor man had violated a burn permit by burning construction debris.

County dispatch center heats up

When most people have a fire they call 911. Saturday night, the 911 operators found themselves calling for help. An ALI module in the San Juan County Sheriff's dispatch center shorted out, creating smoke. The dispatchers called the fire department but were able to isolate the problem themselves. They disabled the module and replaced it with one they had in stock. Sheriff Bill Cumming said the dispatch center continued to operate smoothly throughout the incident.

January 5, 2003

A 21-year-old Friday Harbor woman reported someone had taken a CD player out of her car while it was unlocked.

An 18-year-old Friday Harbor man was cited for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

A 50-year-old Friday Harbor woman brought her 17-year-old daughter into the sheriff’s office and reported she had been drinking alcohol. The daughter was cited for minor in possession or consuming alcohol.

January 4, 2003

Someone knocked over a decorative post with a house number on in. The 56-year-old owner said this was the third or fourth time it was broken.

January 3, 2003

A 42-year-old Friday Harbor woman found a large bone in her driveway. She took it to a veterinarian who could not determine if it was human or animal. The bone is being held at the sheriff’s office until it can be examined.

A 52-year-old Friday Harbor man reported someone had spray painted graffitti on the back of his business.

A 49-year-old Friday Harbor man reported 100-feet of Christmas lighting was taken from the corner of Spring and First Streets.

January 2, 2003

A 22-year-old Friday Harbor man was arrested on an outstanding warrant when he appeared for court.

January 1, 2003

A 25-year-old Friday Harbor man was sent a warning letter after people reported his dog leaves its yard and barks at people walking by.
