Deputies honor deputy on duty in Iraq

San Juan County Sheriff Deputy Scott Taylor will be far from San Juan Island while he serves in Iraq with the National Guard but he remains close to the hearts of his fellow deputies. They are wearing pins from the 81st Armor Brigade in honor of Taylor.

San Juan County Sheriff Dispatcher Gina Hulme contacted the National Guard and arranged for the pins to be sent to the sheriff's office. Every sheriff's employee including dispatchers will wear the pins until Taylor returns from his tour of duty.

The Washington Army National Guard's 81st Brigade is comprised of more than 4,000 soldiers, 3,200 of whom are based in Washington according to the governor's office. This is the largest deployment of Washington National Guard personnel since World War II.

The brigade was called up November 15, 2003 and after training at Fort Lewis left for Iraq in February. The deployment is expected to last 18 months, 12 of which will be served in Iraq. Taylor had a brief break when he was called to testify in a trial in San Juan County Superior Court. He has since rejoined his brigade.

Taylor served as a deputy on Orcas Island prior to being called up. His position will be waiting for him when he returns according to Sheriff Bill Cumming.
