San Juan County Sheriff's office has released illustrations of some of the equipment stolen from the Friday Harbor water treatment plant last Sunday (January 12, 2003). Five respirators like the one pictured here but with purple filters were taken. Anyone with information about the theft can call the sheriff's office at 360.378.4151.

An airpack worth $2000 was among the approximately $10,000 worth of items stolen. The airpack was similar to the harness pack (illustration on the left) except it had a yellow Scott bottle (illustration on the right).

Uninstalled security system
taken in water plant break-in

Someone broke into the Town of Friday Harbor's water treatment plant Sunday night (January 12) and made off with about $6,000 of items - including an uninstalled security system. The water supply was not affected.

The break-in occurred between 8 p.m. Sunday night and 7 a.m. Monday morning. Five breathing respirators and an air pack used in case of a chlorine leak were taken. Protective gloves for dealing with caustic material were stolen. Small power tools, two-way radios, and lab testing equipment were also taken.

The backs of two radios with identification tags attached were found on First Street Monday afternoon. Town Administrator King Fitch said it appeared the thiefs had tried unsuccessfully to pull off the tags.

Fitch said the town installed a security system at the wastewater treatment plant in 2001 after its insurance company recommended it. Wastewater plants had been broken into by people needing equipment for drug labs. The security system for the water treatment plant was to have been installed January 6 or 7, but the locksmith wasn't able to do it then.

Utilities Superintendent Mike Wilks consulted with state and county health officials after the break-in was discovered. Tests were done at the plant and at distribution points. No sign of contamination was detected.

Undersheriff Jon Zerby said the sheriff's department has some physical evidence obtained at the scene. Entry to one building was gained through a window. The investigation is continuing.
