GLASS CONTAINER RECYCLING CHANGESWHEN? Starting June 1, 2004 all glass containers (bottles and jars) can be recycled with your other commingled recyclables. Simply remove the lids, rinse the container and recycle it with your wastepaper, newspaper, plastics numbered 1 through 7, cardboard, tin cans, and aluminum cans. Lids can be recycled if they are metal or recyclable plastic. WHERE? Commingling of glass containers is allowed on Orcas, San Juan, and Shaw Islands. WHY? The new recycling facility in Woodinville is capable of efficiently and effectively separating glass containers from all the other recyclables. This allows for a more convenient and cost effective system for recycling glass containers. Because glass is a heavy material, relative to the other materials, it simply falls out from the other commingled products entering the plant and is then sent down a conveyer system and loaded into containers for recycling. The lighter materials, after being screened out from the glass, are then sent to other parts of the plant for further separation and processing. Any questions please call 370-0500. |
