Shaw Islanders foil burglars
posted 01/23/01
Vigilant Shaw Island residents alerted Special Deputy Al Wilding Sunday, Jan. 21, when they observed a small boat land at a private dock on Shaw Island. A Jan. 15 break-in at a Neck Point home triggered the heightened awareness. Sheriff's deputies launched two boats, one from Lopez Island and one from Orcas Island, and intercepted the small boat off Bell Island.
The boat contained items -- heirloom bows and arrows; glassware and liquor -- allegedly stolen from the home on Shaw Island. William Rupp, 18, of Deer Harbor was arrested for second-degree theft. A 17-year-old Orcas Island man was also arrested. Another juvenile was released. A fourth person was questioned Monday.
According to Sheriff Bill Cumming, the department has gathered information implicating the suspects in the Jan. 15 and 21 burglaries.
