EDITORIAL: Clear communication with WSF essential

What do islanders want from the ferry system? The message we're sending out is anything but clear. We say the proposed changes to the commuter ticket books will be harmful to islanders, yet no one from the Board of County Commissioners travels to Olympia to testify before the state Transportation Commission.

We say ferry service is vital to the islands. Yet the majority of the Town of Friday Harbor Councilmembers approve changes to Memorial Park, regardless of the potential adverse impact on ferry traffic flow. Warnings from WSF that ferry sailings will be reduced if traffic flow is not improved are ignored.

A dozen Washington State Ferries officials and the state Transportation Commissioner travel to Friday Harbor for a ferry advisory meeting and outnumber the citizens in attendance. What does that say about our concern about the ferry system?

It is time islanders and elected representatives get their act together. If we don't communicate directly and effectively with WSF and the state Transportation Commission, we can hardly expect them to respond in the way we want. Actions speak louder than words, and our actions are saying we don't really care.
