EDITORIAL: Something doesn't feel rightBy Sharon Kivisto posted 09/11/2007 The county, through the Marine Resources Committee, is pursuing a county-wide Aquatic Reserve. When finalized new 90-year regulations will be imposed by DNR on state-owned aquatic lands within the reserves. When two county councilmembers can be heard on tape discussing "damage control" in terms of how the MRC coordinator's slide show should be presented to the whole council before the vote something is wrong. When the only stakeholders invited to speak are those in favor of more regulation something is wrong. When the entire county is included - with areas to be excluded later - rather than the other way around, something is wrong. When the consequences aren't clear but the council proceeds anyway, something is wrong. Environmental protection is the new sacred cow. How can you vote against it? I am not anti-environment. (I earned a B.S. in Natural Resources from the University of Michigan.) Common sense needs to play a part here. We need to include all of San Juan County in decisions. By that I mean we need to consider the needs of all of our citizens. Not everyone is making their living from research or consultant grants. |
