WASHINGTON STATE FERRIES

EDITORIAL: Don't miss opportunity to talk to WSF

By Sharon Kivisto

Monday, October 6, Washington State Ferry officials and staff will travel to the San Juan Islands to discuss the future of ferry service with county residents. They will be onboard the inter-island ferry from 11:40 to 3:40 p.m. as part of a San Juan Ferry Advisory Committee meeting. So far I have not seen one word of publicity from the SJFAC about this.

I called the county Friday to ask staff to at least add information about the meeting to the county's Web site. It's been on San Juan Islander's Web site since August 23 after I read about it on WSF Chief David Moseley's weekly update.

The county Council has said the ferries are a top priority but when it comes to working with the ferry system they continually drop the ball. Council chair Howie Rosenfeld has disparagingly referred to the WSF meetings as "dog and pony" shows several times during council meetings.

WSF meets with other ferry-served communities. The other communities are being heard. These meetings are our opportunities to have our opinions and concerns heard. If we foolishly ignore these opportunities, we only have ourselves to blame.

If you do not show up, don't bother to complain later. If you can't attend, the presentation and background materials and comment forms are available online. Take the time to become informed and share your opinion with WSF.

At the last meeting, 36 citizens were in attendance. This time the meeting is being held on the inter-island ferry. Climb onboard and let WSF know how you feel about a possible reservation system and other changes under consideration.
