Women's Soccer Clinic offered on Orcas

posted 04/07/2008
Eastsound—Orcas Recreation Program and local soccer coach Suzanne Olson are offering a soccer clinic for women (18 and up) beginning Sunday, April 13th. This non-competitive series is open to women of all abilities. Olson says, "We’ll focus on fitness, fun and soccer skills. Anyone can do it—each person can start from wherever they are. It’s great way to just get in shape for spring—and learn a little more about the game."

Olson hopes to bring together a core of ex-soccer players, parents of soccer players who want to learn more about the game to support their kids, and other women who just want to come out and play. The schedule was arranged so that women from Lopez and Friday Harbor could also attend the Sunday sessions.

More experienced players will be able to hone skills and refresh their muscle memories while beginners will develop new skills. Everyone will benefit from the stretching and fitness elements—especially tailored to meet the needs of adult women.

Participants should come prepared with a number five soccer ball and water. Cleats are preferable and shin guards are optional. Used cleats will be available at the clinic for a $5 donation to Orcas Rec. Cleats can also be found at Eastsound Sporting Goods and at The Exchange.

Meets at the Orcas Football Field:

  • Sunday, April 13th: 1 – 3 pm

  • Wednesday, April 16th: 5:30 – 6:30 pm

  • Sunday, April 20th: 1 – 3 pm

  • Wednesday, April 23rd: 5:30 – 6:30 pm

Cost: $25 for the series (okay to sign up for some, if not all)

All proceeds benefit the Orcas Rec Program

To register, call Orcas Rec: 376-5339

Whale Museum Docent Training Program

Friday Harbor, Wash. –Join the Whale Museum team! This opportunity is perfect for people who want to learn about the marine environment and their relationship to it. Meet people from around the world, learn new information and skills, and enhance the visitor experience by sharing this knowledge as museum Exhibit Hall Docent.

Training includes classroom natural history of local marine mammals, human impacts on our marine ecosystem, as well as successful strategies for working with the public. Capitalizing on the charisma of whales, docents present these animals as ambassadors for conservation.

By utilizing artifacts, text panels, and hands-on specimens, docents will be able to explain to visitors the characteristics of a marine mammal, what marine mammals live in the area, and the interactions between humans and whales over time.

Training sessions are held monthly April though August; the next training session is Thursday, April 17, 2008, 6:00pm – 9:00pm at The Whale Museum, 62 First St. N. The fee for this program is $25 for non-members to cover materials costs and is free for current museum members. This program is for potential volunteers aged 14 and over.

For more information or to sign up, please call Nikki Ruggiero, Volunteer Coordinator, at 378-4710 extension 28. Founded in 1979, The Whale Museum’s mission is to promote stewardship of whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education and research.

In addition to providing exhibits, the Museum also provides programs including: the Orca Adoption Program, Soundwatch Boater Education, Marine Naturalist Training, San Juan Islands Marine Mammal Stranding Network, and the Whale Hotline. Hot Classes to Fight Off the Winter Cold at Skagit Valley College
– Orcas Island and San Juan Center

posted 01/02/2008
If you want to warm-up this winter come inside and join in one of our "hot" Community Education classes at Skagit Valley College on Orcas Island or at the San Juan Center.

Orcas Islands’ Great Writers, Great Books with instructor, Michele Griskey-Watson, is a reading, lecture and discussion pleasure addressing the moral and ethical concerns raised by some of our great books and authors. It is filled with reviews of historical content while paying close attention to the author’s methods and techniques.

San Juan Center’s "heat"comes from the Economics of Global Warming with instructor, Ed Dolan, challenging students to delve more deeply into the important global warming problems of our times and into policy ranging from Kyoto Protocol to promotion of bio-fuels; The Search for the Northwest Passage with instructor, Barbara Fry, analyzing how greed, desire and curiosity stimulated and drove the quest to find the route to the Orient; two expansive computers classes, Photoshop Elements and Excel with instructor, Ian Byington, providing the hands-on learning of transforming photos into powerful presentations and taking the frustration out of basic spreadsheets; and Conversational Spanish with instructor, Joe Tein, moving students into the realm of Spanish comprehension with all the essential words and phrases.

For more information about any of these classes, or to enroll, call Skagit Valley College, San Juan Center at 378-3220, or come by our office at 221 Weber Way, Friday Harbor.
