posted 12/17/04
PRESS RELEASE: Roche Harbor invites you to dress in your Victorian costumes and come join in the warmth of a historical village holiday this weekend, Dec. 18 and 19. Roche Harbor will be hosting their annual Christmas Festival with something for everyone. Santa will be available from 3-7 pm both days, along with artists booths open. (If you need help with a costume call our Costume Department 378-9825)

On Saturday afternoon at 4 pm in the hotel lobby, enjoy listening to Christmas lore as told by Barb Persinger, who will be talking about the many faces of Santa Claus and explaining where many of our Christmas traditions come from. Pictures with Santa will be taken from 3-5 pm.

At 5:30 pm the Christmas Boat Parade begins - last year the boats sailed down in front of McMillin's Dining Room in order to give diners a superb view of their lighted creations. At 7 pm Stage Left presents a "Christmas Memories" performance in the Pavilion in front of a warm, cozy fire in the fireplace.

On Sunday from 2-4 pm, children can enjoy free craft-making with Santa's elf, Tinsel, making their own creations as gifts for family members.

At 4 pm entertainment by Folk Voice Duo playing International Christmas music. Pictures with Santa will be taken 4:30- 7pm. At 6 pm carol singing begins helped along by the Overman Family Musicians, and the beautiful voices of Angel Michaels and Chinmayo.

Roche Harbor is the perfect backdrop for old-fashioned Christmas traditions. (If you need help with a costume call our Costume Department 378-9825)

Some of the events taking place on Saturday include a presentation by Barb Persinger about "The History of Santa Claus" which includes her collection of Santa's from all over the world in the Hotel lobby at 4 pm. At 5:30 pm the "Light up the Harbor" Christmas Boat Parade begins its tour around the harbor. What a beautiful sight last year - to watch the brightly lit boats sail past waterfront McMillin's Dining Room. New this year at Roche Harbor is the Stage Left Production of "Christmas Memories" by Dylan Thomas featuring professional actor Daniel Mayes and the beautiful voice of Laura Concord at 7 pm in The Pavilion.

On Sunday all children are invited to "Santa's Elves Workshop" on board the Party Barge where they can enjoy two hours of crafting their very own gifts for Mom and Dad under the supervision of Roche Harbor Elf Tinsel from 2-4 pm. At 4pm music will be provided by Folk Voice Duo playing International Christmas music from all over the world. Caroling begins at 6pm, helped along again this year by the voices and music of Overman Family Musicians.

In this truly unique village setting you will find fire cressets and firepits ablaze with warmth to keep the chills away, along with hot roasted chestnuts, hot apple cider and espresso drinks . This is the time villagers and guests dress up in Victorian costumes for an evening of old fashioned Island Christmas spirit! Take advantage of the special lodging package and be part of it! Visit Roche Harbor's Web site for more details.

Chestnuts roasted, fires glowed and music filled the air as more than 200 islanders and visitors gathered at Roche Harbor Village Sunday evening (Dec. 21, 2003) for the annual Old Fashioned Caroling event. Dozens of people wore Victorian outfits borrowed from the costume department and Santa was on hand to hear last minutes wishes.

The Overman Family Musicians from Arlington - Ken and Marilyn Jane Overman and their eight children - performed sacred, classical and traditional music. Ages of the children range three to 21 years old. The youngest playing beginning violin. The ensemble includes five violins, a viola, two cellos, a flute and a classical guitar.

Sam Buck, Sr. led the audience as they sang carols. Angel Michaels performed some Christmas songs.
