Orcas Island fishermen Matt Minnis, Jerry Schmidt and Dave Hall reeled in 37 lb. 1 oz of fish in the first day of Roche Harbor's First Annual Salmon Classic Invitational Friday, Feb. 6, 2004. This puts them in the lead for the $1,500 prize for total boat weight. Chris Johnson of Mount Vernon hauled in the biggest fish so far - 26 lbs. 2 oz. If no one catches a bigger fish on Saturday, Johnson will go home with $10,000 in twenty dollar bills.

The fishing derby attracted 324 anglers on 91 boats. This is the first year for what Roche Harbor staff hope is an annual tradition.

Craig Cruickshank of Tofino, B.C. might be taking home $5,000 for second prize if no one beats his 18 lb. 2 oz. salmon.

The event is one of six derbies in the new Northwest Salmon Derby series. All profits from entry fees and sponsorships will be donated to local scholarships and selected associations.

Fishing began at 7:30 a.m. Johnson caught his fish at 9 a.m. In second place ($5,000 prize) is Craig Cruickshank of Tofino, B.C. with a 18 lb .02 oz. fish. He caught his fish shortly after noon. Third place ($1,500) as of Friday was Kyle Fowler of Bothell with a 16 lb. 3 oz. fish. caught at 2:30 p.m. Matt Minnis of Orcas Island is in fourth place ($1,000) with a 15 lb. fish caught at 11:20 a.m. In fifth place is Jeff Waldron of Anacortes with a 14 lb. 5 oz. fish caught at 8 a.m.

Each fisherman can catch one fish per day. The competition resumes at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 and ends at 5 p.m. Prizes will be handed out Saturday night.

Larry LaVoy and Anne Marshall of the state Dept. of Fish and Wildlife examined the 21 fish caught Friday. Scale samples were taken to determine the age of the fish. Tissue samples will be used to examine the DNA which can be used be used to determine the river of origin.

Roche Harbor's First Annual Salmon Classic Invitational takes place today and tomorrow. Three hundred and twenty-four anglers on 91 boats from all over the Pacific Northwest and Canada are competing for the big prize of $10,000, as well as other great prizes including a second prize of $5,000 and third of $1,500. Fish will be on display in front of the grocery store. Fishing ends at 5 p.m. today with weigh-in until 7 p.m. Fishing resumes Saturday morning.

Roche Harbor's First Annual Salmon Classic Invitational Feb. 5-7 2004 is just about ready to kick off with just a few spaces left for the angler who does not want to get left out. Roche Harbor has attracted anglers from all over the Pacific Northwest and Canada to compete for the big prize of $10,000, as well as other great prizes including a second prize of $5,000 and third of $1,500.

This Salmon Classic Invitational has been named one of six derbies in the new Northwest Salmon Derby Series produced by the Northwest Marine Trade Association. As a participating angler in the NW series, there will be a chance to win a new 18-foot Stabi-Craft boat, Suzuki motor and EZ-Load trailer, as well as other great prizes.

Roche Harbor's first annual Salmon Classic Invitational Fishing Derby is scheduled for February 5, 6 and 7, 2004. The fishing derby will attract anglers from all over the Pacific Northwest and Canada who are interested in catching the winter black mouth, also known as Chinook, King and Tyee species of salmon. A limited entry of 100 boats, with up to four anglers per boat -- including the skipper, will kick off the derby for a $500 entry fee per boat.

Guaranteed cash prizes of $10,000 for first place, $5,000 for second place $1,500 for third place and $1,000 for fourth place, as well as a best boat total weight prize of $1,500, is sure to make the event popular. All profits from entry fees and sponsorships will be donated to local scholarships and selected associations.

The event will start off with a mandatory Skipper Orientation and Rules Meeting on Thursday February 5 at 5 p.m. followed by a dinner banquet for all anglers and sponsors in McMillin's Dining Room at Roche Harbor. Fishing will begin on Friday and end Saturday afternoon with the winners announced at the Awards Dinner Banquet at 8 p.m. Fishing licenses, bait and tackle can all be obtained from Roche Harbor Market.
