Jimmie Lawson of Friday Harbor and Jeff Grannum of Whidbey Island tied for first place in the 2006 Roche Harbor Salmon Classic Invitational Saturday, Feb. 4 and each took home $7,500. They both caught king salmon weighing 17 pounds, 8 ounces and split the first and second prize money.

Grannum caught his winner in relatively calm conditions off Freeman Island on Friday, the first day of the derby. Lawson battled for his winning fish, hooked in Rocky Bay during a wind storm Saturday. "It was kind of nasty out there... It was a hard derby," Lawson said.

Jake Phillips of Friday Harbor hooked the third-place fish -- a 16-pound, 11-ounce blackmouth -- and received $1,500. Barbara Narozonick finished fourth in her first derby after netting a 13-13 salmon. She went back to Olympia with $1,000.

Mike McAuley, Scott Kobelin and Kirk Hawley, all of Bellingham, won the $1,500 Best Boat prize. They netted salmon totaling of 28 pounds, 9.5 ounces.

Hunter Wood, 5 years old, won the Youngest Angler trophy.

Jay Field won an entry in next year's derby during a random drawing. The prize, valued at more than $500, was donated by Roche Harbor Resort in memory of Rich Misdom. The beloved Roche Harbor resident and avid angler was always the first to register in the previous derbies.

Only a dozen of the derby's 98 boats braved the nearly 60-mile-per-hour winds and greater that six-foot seas at the start of the second day. More boats joined in later. "In 26 years up here, that's the roughest I've ever seen Spieden Channel," said Roche Harbor Harbormaster Kevin Carlton, who operated a derby patrol boat.

"It was something for the record books. It was just sloppy," said Matt Chevalier, a fishing veteran in San Juan and Alaska waters. "There were waterspouts all around us."

"You usually have to go Alaska to get that adrenalin rush," said his brother Marty Chevalier, who fished in his late father Bill Chevalier's bowpicker. Marty, who is also a veteran commercial fisherman was unfazed by the rough seas. He cooked "scrambled" eggs when other anglers were turning around and heading back to Roche Harbor.

"It was fun," Matt Chevalier said.

Most of the anglers spirits rose as the wind died on Saturday night. "I can't say enough what nice people come up to the derby and what great sports they were with the bad weather," said derby organizer Debbie Sandwith.

"Thank you so much for weathering the most challenging winter weather in many years," said Roche Resort General Manager Brent Snow during the awards ceremony.

Whidbey Island man leads derby

Barbara Narozonick was enjoying her first ever fishing derby. As of 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, her salmon was in second place.
