Raymond Francois of Mount Vernon won the Seventh Annual Roche Harbor Salmon Classic Invitational with a 16-pound, 4-ounce king that proved lunker-enough to beat 345 other anglers in the derby marked by warm temperatures, sunny skies and calm water Friday-Saturday, Feb. 5-6.

"We were pretty excited when we got it," Francois said of his crew of Chris Bingham, Keith Olson and Jeff Prinz, all of Bellevue.

They considered themselves lucky to land the king off Lopez Island's Upright Head at about 2 p.m. the first day of derby. "It was barely hooked," Francois said. "When it hit the deck the hook came out."

Thirty-one fish were weighed in the first day and 16-pound king rarely reigns in a winter derby. "We were nervous all day long," Francois said.

Hatchery chinnook proved elusive the second day, though -- only 12 were turned in -- and Francois finished a winner during his second entry in the Roche Harbor derby.

The crew will split the winnings but Francois' daughter Nicolienne will also be a winner. "I'll probably put my share in my little girl's bank account," he said.

Second-place winner Neal Kamrin of Bellevue knows the price of a tag. When he weighed in his king Friday it registered 15 pounds, 12 ounces -- exactly the same as Ferndale resident David Arnold's fish weighed in earlier in the day. Judge Tony Floor noticed the Kamrin's fish was lacking its identifying tag -- a derby requirement. When the piece of plastic was attached it added an ounce. That one-sixteenth of a pound made a $2,000 difference in winnings -- the second-place finisher is awarded $5,000 the third-place angler receives $3,000.

Richard Price of Ferndale

And only an ounce separated Scott Veitz's fourth-place fish from Arnold's third-placer. That ounce made a $1,000 difference in the Everett angler's wallet as the fourth-placer wins $2,000.

The Roche Harbor Classic's 2005 winner -- Richard Price of Ferndale -- finished fifth with his 14-pound, 12-ounce fish and won $1,000.

Matthew Rose of Bellingham snagged $2,000 for his 5-pound, 4-ounce salmon which proved to be the Mystery Fish winner.

The Best Boat Total Weight went to Mike McAuley, Kirk Hawley, both of Bellingham, and Pat Phillips, Pateros, for their three fish weighing 26 pounds, 10 ounces. They received $2,000.

Tony Floor, Northwest Marine Trade Association reprsentative and Roche Harbor Derby judge, presented Jennifer Payne of Friday Harbor with a $500 check from Lake Union Sea Ray for Women's Largest Catch -- a 10-pound, 2-ounce fish.

Peyton Moss, 11 of Bend, Ore., was presented the youngest angler award at the derby.

Jen Johanson from Mukilteo won the drawing sponsored by Roche Harbor for an entry into the 2011 Salmon Classic Derby.

In addition to the cash awards, more than $5,000 prizes donated by industry vendors and retailers were given to the anglers.
