Whalen wins Frank Wilson Fishing Derby

Raymond Ploghoft won $250 for third place with a 19.87 pounder he caught in the third week. More than 70 anglers caught 120 fish in the derby, in memory of Frank Wilson who started the San Juan Aid Unit and was the San Juan Island Emergency Medical Services (EMS) director for 25 years. All proceeds from the derby are donated to the SJI EMS. The biggest weekly fish was worth a $75 gift certificate from King's Marine. Rod Turnbull won during the final week with a 14.62 pounder. Last year, a mystery fish category was added with a prize of $1,000 for the winner of the random ticket drawn from the remaing participants. Johnny Jackson, who won the mystery fish drawing last year, won again. Jim Lawson won an Ace Line Hauler at the awards ceremony, which took place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16 at King's Marine, where many door prizes were given out.
Final Days...In the final days of the 2009 Frank Wilson Fishing Derby, which ends at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 15 there was one last report: Only seven fish were turned in this past week. Rod Turnbull caught a 14.62 lb. fish, Johnny Jackson turned in three fish 9.91 lb, 7.79 lb. and 5.60 pounds. Ken Serbian caught a 7.66 pounder, and Pete Nelsen turned in a 12.11 lb. and 8.42 lb. fish. A total of 117 fish have been turned in so far this year in the derby. Carter Whalen is still in the top spot with his 21.41 lb. fish. Chuck Payne is in the number two spot with his 20.67 lb. fish. And in third place is Raymond Ploghoft with his 19.87 pounder. Winner of biggest fish caught for week #9 was Kevin Klein, with a 19.52 lb. fish. This fish also moved Kevin in the number 4 spot on the top 10 leader board, as well as winning a $75 gift certificate from King's Marine. Kevin also was winner of the biggest fish caught for week #8 with a 14.35 pounder, which landed him another $75 gift certificate from King's Marine. Other fish caught this past week included a 17.67 lb. fish caught by Kelby Anderson, which moved him into the number 6 spot on the leader board. Ken Serbian turned in a couple of fish weighing in at 14.60 lbs. and 7.86 lbs. Kevin Klein also turned in a 13.09 lb. fish last week. Ivan Moorhouse caught a 11.31 pounder, Donovan Wilson caught a 10.52 pounder and Jerry Gordon with a 9.18 lb. fish. At the end of week #9, the top 10 leader board reads as follows, with Carter Whalen still in the lead!
There are only 10 days left of the derby, which ends on Wed. Apr. 15. Frank Wilson Fishing Derby Update:Fishing picked up a little this past week in the Frank Wilson Salmon Derby, with a total of eight fish turned in. Kevin Klein had the largest fish for week eight, weighing in at 14.35 lbs, which was good for a $75 gift certificate from King's Marine. Kevin also netted a 10.48 lb. fish during the week. Other fish caught for the week were Jimmy Lawson with a 11.20 lb. fish, Gary Lee with a 11.19 lb. fish, Mike Sear with a 9.77 lb. fish, Pete Nelson with a 9.34 and 8.42 lb. fish, and Marty Chevalier with a 7.57 lb. fish. A total of 103 fish have been caught so far, with 2 weeks remaining of the derby. The top ten leader board remains the same as last week, with Carter Whalen still on top with his 21.41 lb. fish. Frank Wilson Fishing Derby UpdateFishing was a little slow this past week, with strong winds and unfavorable tides. Nine fish were weighed in for the week. Thomas Smythe took home a $75 gift certificate from King's Marine with his 16.32 pound fish caught Sunday, March 8, which was the biggest fish caught for week #6 of the derby. This fish also moved him into the number 8 spot on the top 10 leader board. Carter Whalen still holds the top spot with his 21.41 pound fish. The standings at the end of week 6 are as follows:
Other fish turned in this past week were three by Jimmy Lawson, a 15.56 lb, 8.43 lb. and 8.34 pounder, Jay Ott with a 12.72 pounder, Travis Mager caught a 10.54 pounder, Jerry Greene turned in a 9.35 pounder, Johnny Jackson with a 6.40 pound fish and Thomas Smythe with a 5.11 pounder. Other fish that hit the scales in the meat department and Kings last week were: Geno James with a 13.76 pounder, Ken Daugherty with a 13.70 lb fish, Travis Berwald caught a 13.51 pounder, Jeff Daugherty caught a 12.83 pounder, Mike Burns turned in a 11.28 lb fish, Bill Goode with a 10.37 lb and 9.41 lb fish, Peter Schmidt with a 10.13 pounder, Ivan Moorhouse with a 9.33 pounder, and finally, Raymond Ploghoft with an 8.72 lb and a 7.81 pound fish. Frank Wilson Derby UpdateTen fish are already weighed in the 5th Annual Frank Wilson Memorial Winter Blackmouth Derby and more have been caught. Andy Holman is in the lead with a whopping 17.13 pound fish Gary Cassidy (16.58#) and Gary Lee (15.66#) are in 2nd and 3rd place. Remember only hatchery caught fish are legal, and all anglers must release wild chinook. Tickets are still available and are $50 at King's Marine. The derby runs through April 15. Fishing derby starts todayThe 5th Annual Frank Wilson Memorial Winter Blackmouth Derby runs from February 1 to April 15, 2009. Although this is just one of several derby's running this time of year, this one is special. In memory of Frank Wilson, all proceeds from the derby are donated to the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) here on San Juan Island. Tickets are $50 and available at King's Marine (located above King's Market) There will be $75.00 gift certificates awarded for the largest fish registered by the end of each week from King's Marine. Grand prize wins $1000, 2nd place wins $500, and 3rd place wins $250. There is also a Mystery (secret) Fish drawing for $1000. In 2008, Jeff Dougherty held onto the lead for the last week with a beautiful 21.02 pound fish! Pete Nelson was second, and Mike Sear came in third place. Johnny Jackson of Friday Harbor won the Mystery Fish prize, which was a new addition to the line-up last year. This year is shaping up to be another great season.
