Carter Whalen reeled in nine fish during the 10-week fishing derby but the only that mattered was the 21.41-pound salmon he caught in week five. Thursday, April 16, he collected his $1,000 first place prize in the 5th Annual Frank Wilson Memorial Winter Blackmouth Derby.

Chuck Payne took home a check for $500 by winning second prize for his 20.67 pound fish. Raymond Ploghoft won $250 for third place with a 19.87 pounder he caught in the third week.

More than 70 anglers caught 120 fish in the derby, in memory of Frank Wilson who started the San Juan Aid Unit and was the San Juan Island Emergency Medical Services (EMS) director for 25 years. All proceeds from the derby are donated to the SJI EMS.

The biggest weekly fish was worth a $75 gift certificate from King's Marine. Rod Turnbull won during the final week with a 14.62 pounder.

Last year, a mystery fish category was added with a prize of $1,000 for the winner of the random ticket drawn from the remaing participants. Johnny Jackson, who won the mystery fish drawing last year, won again.

Jim Lawson won an Ace Line Hauler at the awards ceremony, which took place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16 at King's Marine, where many door prizes were given out.
