Oldies and goodies at Pig War Picnic

Faster food lines, hot music, kids' games, silent auction

posted 06/24/04
The Pig War Picnic starts right after the July 4 parade. The event is free; donations are gratefully accepted. Donations support the museum's maintenance, exhibits and educational programs.

Deb Sundog, who's been rocking San Juan and Down Sound venues for 16 years, leads an oldies jam with Steve Keys at the Pig War Picnic, July 4, 2004 on the San Juan Historical Museum grounds.

"They are definitely the hottest players I've ever worked with in my life," Sundog said. "I wish I'd met them when I was 20. They also linked me into a family of musicians that are the best Seattle has to offer."

Also performing at the Pig War Picnic: the One More Time Band, with Lori Larkin singing in 1940s Big Band style.

"It's our annual old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration," organizer Pat O'Day said. "There's great family fun with games for the kids, live music, contests, museum exhibits and a giant auction of unique items. And National Park Ranger/Historian Mike Vouri will give a preview of his play, The Life and Times of Gen. George Pickett, telling the story of the Pig War. Vouri will be accompanied by banjoist Mike Cohen and Sugar on the Floor. "

CenturyTel will sponsor a Bucket Brigade contest for children. O'Day said the Pig War Picnic features "great food with quick service," food lines have been reorganized so lines are faster. The menu includes Puyallup Fair cheeseburgers with Walla Walla sweet onions, barbecued pork sandwiches, hot dogs, cole slaw, pizza, ice cream and soft drinks. Wine and beer will be available.
