Spontaneous generosity
recommended for the class of 2001

History teacher Greg Sawyer encouraged Friday Harbor High School Class of 2001 graduates to pursue their passion and practice spontaneous generosity. He was chosen by the students to be the guest speaker at the commencement ceremonies held Saturday, June 9, 2001. The fifty-two graduates benefitted from San Juan Islanders' extraordinary generosity -- scholarships totalling $176,410 were awarded.

Angela Williams received a full-ride scholarship from the IFC Foundation. She plans to attend Pacific Lutheran University. Quinn Gillespie who will attend Whitman College received the $14,000 Bishop Fleet Foundation scholarship

In its second year of existence, the San Juan Dollars for Scholars awarded $16,700 in scholarships to students who completed community service.
